Taking CBD Before And After Workout: How It Helps

Cannabidiol or CBD is relatively new to the fitness market, but its hype has quickly grown. In fact, 1.3 million residents of the United Kingdom (UK) are using it.

But, why there are so many people using it?  What are its benefits when used before and after working out?  Is CBD legal in the UK?  These might be some of the questions you have in mind about CBD. Read on to get some answers.

What Is CBD

CBD, as defined by the National Library of Medicine, is a chemical compound that you can find in the Cannabis sativa plant. It’s believed that CBD doesn’t cause psychological effects, unlike its counterpart, the delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which can give you a ‘high.’

In a report from the World Health Organization (WHO), CBD doesn’t show any abuse or dependence potential in humans. It’s also believed to be an effective treatment for epilepsy and may be useful for treating other medical conditions. To date, CBD doesn’t show any evidence of public health-related problems.

CBD has a good safety profile, and several countries have changed their policies in using it as a medicinal product. In the UK, CBD is legal as long as it contains less than 0.2% THC and is derived from approved industrial hemp. Benefits Of CBD In Fitness

Should you use CBD before and after a workout?  There are a few studies conducted on using CBD in relation to workouts.

A 2019 study titled Cannabis Use in Active Athletes: Behaviours Related to Subjective Effects showed that CBD, when combined with THC, can provide the most benefit in the calmness of the athletes, compared to when using CBD alone. The result of the study showed concern in the use of cannabis in the real world to optimize wellbeing and calmness while minimizing adverse side effects.

A 2020 study titled Cannabidiol and Sports Performance: A Narrative Review of Relevant Evidence and Recommendations for Future Research showed that CBD has a potential benefit for athletes. It can protect them from GI damage associated with inflammation and promote the healing of traumatic skeletal injuries. However, the study was very preliminary and time-inconsistent because the study was derived from preclinical studies.

A 2021 review titled Potential Role of Cannabidiol on Sports Recovery: A Narrative Review showed evidence in the potential use of CBD in improving the efficacy and efficiency in the recovery process, as well as on sports-related fatigue. The review, however, needs more understanding and further studies due to the lack of elite athletes and enough information.

Although the studies above need further research, it can be said that using CBD on your workout has known benefits. These include:

May Relieve Unmanageable Pain

There are various types of unmanageable pain or chronic pain. One good example is massive muscle pain due to excessive weight lifting. Another example is when there’s still lingering pain when you’ve recovered from an injury. 

In 2018, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) reviewed 47 studies that used cannabis in treating various types of chronic pain; 30% showed a reduction in pain compared to the 26% that took the placebo.

NCCIH also reviewed 28 studies in 2015 that used CBD in managing chronic pain, and it showed improvements in pain measures. CBD may also help manage the pain related to inflammation resulting from an intense workout in your previous session.

May Reduce Hypertension

Hypertension is a serious medical condition due to an increase in blood pressure. It risks the heart, the brain, and other organs in the body.

WHO estimates that 46% of adults with hypertension are unaware that they have the condition. Moreover, 42% of adults with hypertension are diagnosed and treated, while 21% with hypertension have it under control.

A 2017 study titled A Single Dose of Cannabidiol Reduces Blood Pressure in Healthy Volunteers showed that using CBD can reduce blood pressure response to stress.

May Improve Focus

If you’re taking CBD before working out, it may help you gain better focus when you’re about to do a workout. 

May Improve Sleep

There’s a study in 2017 relating the use of CBD in aiding sleep, but the study is still in its infancy and was limited to the sample sizes and lack of control. Some athletes do admit that they use CBD for sleep, pain relief, and muscle recovery. Yair Rodriguez and Nate Diaz, both UFC fighters, use CBD to aid recovery during training sessions.

Final Words

CBD, particularly CBD oil, is new but has shown great potential since a lot of people are using it already. Studies are limited and have yet to prove the efficacy of using CBD before and after workouts. But, one thing is for sure—too much can lead to greater harm than good.
