Bowflex Adjustable Dumbbells 1090 Reviews

We took a look online and discovered 1,358 customer reviews of the Bowflex Adjustable Dumbbells SelectTech 1090. Overall, these very popular adjustable dumbbells scored 4.7 out of 5.

If these are out of your budget or are out of stock, you can compare prices on the Bowflex 552 2 – 24 kg dumbbells.

By combining expert review sites, the customer ratings, and our own personal experience with these dumbbells, we’ve awarded them a Savvy Score of 8.7/10.

PROS:
  • Compact dumbbells, taking up far less room than a dumbbell rack with individual pairs.
  • Quick weight adjustments between sets and exercises – unlike spinlock dumbbells which take a long time to adjust. The dial turns on each end of the dumbbell very smoothly and easily.
  • Easy to set up and use.
  • Increases to a heavy weight (82kg in total across both dumbbells)

CONS:
  • If purchasing in the UK or Europe, the weight is in kilograms, whereas the originals are designed in lbs. This means that the weight moves up in odd increments (4, 7, 9, 11, 14, 16, 18 etc).
  • Several reviewers who purchased on Amazon.com reported broken plates and no warranty to cover it.
  • Experienced lifters were unhappy with the bevelled edge of the handles. While fine on lower weights, when bench pressing with 30kg+ it can dig into your hand and feel uncomfortable.
  • Many customers report having a very poor experience with customer services. Once problems occur, they are reluctant to take responsibility.
  • Some users reported discs falling off while performing weightlifting exercises. This can be dangerous if it happens at the wrong time during a move with heavy weights.

Fantastic product. I used to have the BodyMax adjustable dumbbells. I opted for them originally because I didn’t think I would need 41kg, and because they were cheaper. However, I would have been better off investing in the BowFlex earlier on.

With the BodyMax ones, you had to hold a button down to adjust the weight, and then after a few months the dials got more and more difficult to turn. Just before the year’s warranty expired, I could not turn the dial on one of the at all. I contacted customer support at Powerhouse fitness who said that I just needed to loosen and oil the plates. I did this, and they worked much better. However, within a few weeks (and after the warranty expired) they seized again, and to make matters worse, one of the plates fell off while exercising and nearly struck me in the head.

The Bowflex are in a different class. They are much better in terms of looks and construction. No button needs to be held to adjust the weights, and the dial turns seemlessly.

Althought Amazon showed a cheaper price on Fitness Savvy, I clicked through to check Fitness Superstore. They happened to have a flash sale on their site, and I got them a few quid cheaper, so always worth checking just in case.
