What is a Freestanding Punch Bag?

Frees standing punch bags are a great alternative to traditional punch bags because they don’t require attachments and can easily be moved – even when filled with sand or water.

These punch bags are exactly as described – free standing.

Typically, they consist of a base – which can be filled with sand or water – and the bag itself.

Benefits of Free Standing Punch Bags

When looking for a punch bag for your home gym, you might be worried about where you can hang it. Traditional punch bags require fixtures and fittings to attach it to either a ceiling or a wall.

There are several issues here. Firstly, it might be difficult to find where to hang the punch bag. Secondly, any fixtures are going to require tools and will leave holes in the wall which all adds up to more work before and after attaching the bracket.

You don’t need to worry about any of that with a freestanding punch bag.

Types of Free Standing Punch Bags

There are two main types of freestanding punch bags – tubes (often called strike tubes) and torsos (sometimes called strike men, or given a name like Bob or Humphrey)

Again, these are self-explanatory – the tubes are like big tubes, and the torso are shaped like a torso.

Best Free Standing Punch Bags

Here is our list of the best free-standing punch bags available for 2021

Century Bob XL

Century BOB XL Freestanding Punch Bag

Century is well-trusted brand in the punch bag arena. Perhaps their most well-known product is the Century Bob and Century Bob XL – both of which feature in this list.

The main things to look for when selecting a free-standing punch bag are height and weight. Some are a fixed height and others are adjustable. Think about it – if you’re training to fight, you want to practice hitting different sized opponents.

Therefore, the higher and lower the punching bag goes, the better.

The Century Bob XL has the greatest range of height adjustment which ranges from 155 – 205 cm (62 – 82 inches). That’s about 5 feet tall to 6′ 6″!

The base can be filled with sand or water and weighs an incredible 270 lbs/122 kg. This means it wont move about when being hit – even if you’re hitting it super hard!

Century Bob has been around for quite a while now, and currently scores 92% according to online reviews we have found.

If you’re looking for the very best free standing punch bag, this is it.

Century Bob

Century BOB Freestanding Punch Bag

Coming in second place in our list of the very best free standing punch bags in the UK is the standard Century Bob.

Built to the same high standard as the XL version, this one is shorter with a smaller range of adjustment, too.

While the XL reaches up to 205 cm, with a range of 50 cm (20 inches), the standard version has a range of 150 – 195 cm (60 – 78 inches). This makes it about 10 cm shorter and 5 cm less range.

Additionally, the punching area is smaller, too.

That said, the base can be filled with the same volume of water and sand, so will be just as sturdy as the larger one. It comes in at about £100 – 200 cheaper than the XL, so we think this is still a great option – especially for those on a tighter budget.

Century Freestanding Punch Bag Original Wavemaster

Century Freestanding Punch Bag Original Wavemaster

You might be noticing a pattern here! The next freestanding punch bag is also from renowned brand, Century. This time we’re looking at the original Wavemaster.

While the Century Bob punching bags are torso shaped, the Wavemaster is a tube.

The base can be filled with the same volume of sand and water as the Bob models, so you can be sure of a sturdy product that won’t move around when being kicked or punched hard.

As with Century’s torso-shaped products, the Wavemaster Pro has an adjustable height from 130 – 175 cm (52 -70 inches).

It is noticeably shorter than the Bob models but is still built to the same high quality.

Manufactured using high-density foam, this strike tube is a popular choice for kickboxers and has a rapid rebound.

Finally, the Wavemaster original is available in three colours – red, blue, and black.

Century Wavemaster XXL

Century Wavemaster XXL

Coming in at number 4 is the Wavemaster XXL from – you guessed it – Century!

As with all the other free standing punch bags we’ve included so far, this model can also be filled with the sturdy 270 lbs/122 kg of sand to ensure the bag does not move around while being hit.

The main difference for this model is that it is not height adjustable – it is fixed at 175 cm (70 inches, or 5′ 9).

That said, it does have a larger strike area than any others in the range so far.

So, if performing low and high kicks is important to you, then this is probably a better option than the torso shaped punch bags.

This model is also available in a range of colours including red, blue, and black.

Boxing Mad Free Standing Punch Bag

Boxing-Mad Free Standing Punch Bag

Finally, the only free-standing punch bag in our list not from Century!

Here we have the popular Boxing Mad punch bag.

It is not as tall as the others in this list, reaching a height of 170 cm (68 inches/5′ 7″) and is not adjustbale.

The base is also smaller so cannot be filled with as much sand or water which means this will move about more.

However, it is less than half the price of others in this list, so if you’re not training as a professional and want something to punch or kick, and you’re not too tall or powerful, then this is the punch bag for you.

It only comes in one colour, but has received great reviews with most of the negatives coming from people who hit harder and probably should have invested a little more money in one of the Century products. A couple of other reviewers also said that it started to leak when filled with water, so if you do get this one, we advise filling it with sand.
